We
hear all the time how important the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central
Mississippi are to people's lives. Alumni, who have gone on to lead
successful lives, tell us how attending a Club as a youth made a big
difference in their lives. Parents tell us how valuable it is to be
able to work full-time, knowing their children are in a safe,
productive, enriching environment. And, of course, our kids say how
much they enjoy coming to their Clubs.
ALUMNI
"The Boys and Girls Club instilled
in me a strong sense of character, responsibility and teamwork. My
years at the Boys and Girls helped me to become the successful
husband, father, professional and community-minded individual that I
am today."
-
Sean Perkins, Consumer Banking Officer, Regions
"I was raised by a single parent. We went to the Club after school
and it was an excellent way to stay out of trouble. So many of the
other kids that grew up with me have been in and out of trouble
because of the lack of supervision and I think the Club directed me
on the right path. I heard how some people say the Club was the
best thing in their community—for me, it was the only thing in my
community.”
-
Savante Stringfellow, Ole Miss Long-Jump Champion and 2000 Olympian
"Attending the Boys
& Girls Club has played a tremendous part in my life then and now. I
learned life principles that taught me how to act and think in real
world situation. As a young person it was important to be around
other children to learn how to interact with my peers and not hide
in a corner. The club is a place that provides a support, education,
mental and physical stability, and conflict resolution to all
members no matter what ethic background a member is a part of."
- Gerren Whitlock,
teacher, Jackson Public Schools
PARENTS
"I love and appreciate the Boy Girls Club…Everything was way above
our budget. I almost lost my job carrying my grandson to work after
school…someone told my son about the Boys and Girls Club. We jumped
for joy. I love the time they allow us to pick up the children, at
6:00p.m. So it is very convenient with my job."
- Charity Wright, parent
“Because the Boys and Girls Clubs are here, it eases my mind – I
don’t have to wonder what my children are up to and what they’ll get
into. They are in a positive place that helps them develop socially.
Their people skills have really improved. They don’t have the
opportunity to do things that I wouldn’t want them to do being at
home unsupervised.”
- Iisha Barnes, parent
“Financially, I was terrified. How was I going to provide
after-school care? Financially, of course, it was best, but I didn’t
realize the things that would come along with that. For me to save
that much money and be able to do other things in the household was
a blessing. But more than that, I saw my kids’ attitudes change…they
were talking about topics at the club that are sometimes difficult
to talk about with your kids – it helps with your parenthood.
- Servia Howard, parent
